Our Perspective

The Essential Guide to Things to Do in Rome

Rome is not simply a city — it is a civilisation you walk through. Nowhere else on earth can you cross a 2,000-year-old amphitheatre, pass through a Renaissance basilica and sit down to one of the world's great culinary traditions within the space of a single afternoon. The challenge has never been finding things to do in Rome; it has always been knowing where to begin.

Our apartments are located in the Celio district — Rome's most authentic historic quarter, directly behind the Colosseum. This position is not simply convenient: it is transformative. When your morning begins with the Colosseum visible from your window, when the Roman Forum is a 10-minute walk and the Baths of Caracalla are around the corner, your entire relationship with the city changes. You stop being a tourist and start being a resident.

That is the philosophy behind our experiences programme. We have partnered with Rome's finest licensed guides and professional tour operators — not aggregators, not platforms, but individuals who have dedicated their careers to this city and who speak English with the fluency and depth of true experts. Every experience we recommend has been personally vetted and is reviewed continuously based on guest feedback.

Whether you are visiting Rome for the first time and need to cover the absolute essentials — the Colosseum, Vatican Museums and Pantheon — or you are a repeat visitor seeking the underground catacombs, the private Imperial Forums or the hidden gardens of the Aventine Hill, our team will match you with the right experience at the right time. No over-priced aggregator fees. No anonymous group tours of 50 people. Just excellent, personal service.

One piece of advice we give every guest: book early. The Colosseum operates on timed entry with a strict daily visitor cap. The Vatican Museums regularly sell out 2–3 weeks in advance during high season. The Borghese Gallery — widely regarded as Rome's finest — limits entry to 360 visitors at a time and requires booking exactly two weeks before your visit. If you wait until you arrive, you will spend your first morning in a queue. Book through us, and you won't.

Your Location

The Celio District: Rome's Best-Kept Secret

Most visitors to Rome stay in Termini or the busy tourist centre near the Pantheon. Our guests stay somewhere better: the Celio district, a quiet, green residential neighbourhood that sits directly behind the Colosseum on one of Rome's original seven hills.

Here you will find no souvenir shops, no tourist traps and no queues of buses. Instead you will find family-run trattorias, ancient churches, ivy-covered palazzos and a pace of life that feels genuinely Roman. The Colosseum is visible from the street outside. The Roman Forum is a 10-minute walk. And when the sun sets over the Palatine Hill, the Celio quarter glows in a way that no photograph can fully capture.

This is the neighbourhood that locals call home — and for the duration of your stay, it is yours too.

10 Practical Tips for Visiting Rome

01

Book the Colosseum at Least 2 Weeks Ahead

Timed entry slots for the Colosseum fill up fast, especially in April–October. Booking 2–3 weeks ahead is the minimum. Book through Colosseum Holidays and we'll handle everything.

02

Arrive at Attractions at Opening Time

The Colosseum, Pantheon and Vatican Museums are all dramatically less crowded in the first 60–90 minutes after opening. Set your alarm and enjoy the same monuments in peaceful, photogenic conditions.

03

Validate Your Public Transport Ticket

Rome's buses and metro require ticket validation on boarding. Inspectors are active and fines are steep. Always validate your ticket immediately upon boarding, even if gates are open.

04

Carry Cash for Small Purchases

Many Roman markets, coffee bars and smaller trattorias still prefer cash. Keep €20–30 in small bills. ATMs (Bancomat) are widely available across the city centre.

05

Cover Your Shoulders & Knees at Religious Sites

All churches and the Vatican enforce a dress code requiring covered shoulders and knees. Carry a light scarf or shawl in your bag. You will be turned away without it — even at St. Peter's Basilica.

06

Drink from the Nasoni Fountains

Rome has over 2,500 free public drinking fountains (nasoni) throughout the city. The water is cold, clean and excellent. Carry a reusable bottle and refill as you walk.

07

Never Pay for Espresso at the Bar Counter

Standing at the bar is always cheaper than sitting at a table (sometimes 3–4× cheaper). Order at the counter, pay first, then hand your receipt to the barista. This is the Roman way.

08

Use the Colosseum Metro Stop Strategically

Metro Line B stops directly at the Colosseum. From our apartments you can walk, but if you're returning from the other side of the city, Metro B is the fastest and most reliable connection.

09

The Vatican Is Free on the Last Sunday of the Month

Vatican Museums offer free admission on the last Sunday of every month. Expect very long queues. If you visit for free, arrive at least 1 hour before opening or after 2pm when morning crowds thin out.

10

Explore the Celio Neighbourhood at Dusk

The hour before sunset in the Celio district is one of Rome's most beautiful experiences. The Colosseum turns amber-gold, the streets empty of tourists and the neighbourhood becomes authentically, quietly Roman.

Need to Know

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best things to do in Rome?

Rome's essential experiences include the Colosseum and Roman Forum, the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, the Pantheon and Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain, the Borghese Gallery, guided food tours through Campo de' Fiori, and exploring the authentic Celio and Trastevere neighbourhoods. For the best experience, combine a guided morning tour with free afternoon exploration.

How far in advance should I book Rome tours?

Book at least 2–4 weeks ahead for the Colosseum and Vatican Museums in spring and summer. The Borghese Gallery must be booked exactly 2 weeks before your visit. In winter (Dec–Feb), 1 week is usually sufficient. Don't risk arriving without tickets — popular time slots sell out completely.

Is it worth getting a guided Colosseum tour?

Absolutely. Queues without a guided skip-the-line ticket can exceed 2–3 hours. More importantly, the Colosseum without a guide is a series of stone arches; with a guide it becomes the stage for the most dramatic stories in human history. Our guests consistently rate the guided Colosseum experience as the highlight of their Rome trip.

What can I do in Rome in 3 days?

Day 1: Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, Baths of Caracalla and the Aventine Hill sunset. Day 2: Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica and Trastevere in the evening. Day 3: Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Campo de' Fiori market, Trevi Fountain and a Roman cooking class. Staying near the Colosseum with us gives you the perfect starting point for each day.

What are the best free attractions in Rome?

Rome's best free experiences: the Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona and all of Rome's piazzas, the Borghese Gardens park, the Pantheon (exterior), all basilicas including San Giovanni in Laterano and Santa Maria Maggiore, the Jewish Ghetto and Portico d'Ottavia, the Trastevere neighbourhood, the Aventine Hill orange garden and famous keyhole, and the Vatican Museums on the last Sunday of each month.

What is the best area to stay in Rome?

The Celio district — where Colosseum Holidays apartments are located — is exceptional. You are 2 minutes from the Colosseum, 10 minutes from the Roman Forum, and 15–20 minutes on foot from the Capitoline Museums, Circus Maximus and Aventine Hill. The neighbourhood is quiet, authentic and genuinely Roman, with no tourist-trap restaurants and excellent local trattorias.

When is the best time to visit Rome?

April–June and September–October offer the ideal combination of mild weather (18–26°C), manageable crowds and long daylight hours. July–August are extremely hot (35°C+) and very crowded — book everything weeks ahead if you visit then. December–February offers the lowest prices, fewest crowds and a romantic, atmospheric city, though some sites have reduced hours.

Are there family-friendly Rome tours?

Yes, several of our experiences work beautifully for families: the Colosseum tour (guides are expert at engaging children with gladiator stories), the Big Bus hop-on hop-off, Roman cooking classes and Vespa sidecar rides. We can tailor experiences to families with children of any age — just let us know when booking and we'll arrange an appropriate guide and format.

Can I visit the Vatican without booking?

Technically yes, but it is rarely practical. Without a pre-booked ticket, queues at the Vatican Museums regularly exceed 2–3 hours, even on weekdays. St. Peter's Basilica is free and has no booking requirement, but entry may be delayed during liturgical functions. For the Sistine Chapel, a pre-booked guided tour is always the most efficient option.

What is included when I book through Colosseum Holidays?

Every experience booked through us includes: skip-the-line tickets where applicable, confirmation of your licensed English-speaking guide with full contact details, precise meeting point instructions, a pre-visit briefing document and direct support from our team before and during your stay. We work exclusively with vetted professionals — no anonymous aggregators or low-quality operators.
