Where to stay near the Colosseum: the Celio and Monti
The Colosseum stands where three of Rome’s historic districts meet: Monti, the Celio and Campitelli. On the Campitelli side lie the Roman Forum and the Palatine; the residential streets nearest the Colosseum are in Monti and on the Celio. Our five apartments are there, 6 to 12 minutes on foot from it.
The Celio
The Celio climbs the Caelian hill, one of the seven, south-east of the Colosseum, as far as the Aurelian Walls. It is a district of churches, convents and gardens: the fortified monastery of Santi Quattro Coronati, the round fifth-century church of Santo Stefano Rotondo, Santi Giovanni e Paolo with the Roman houses beneath it, and the public park of Villa Celimontana.
In the Celio:

- Prestige 3 bedrooms · Colosseum: 12 min on foot
Monti
Monti is Rome’s first rione, spread over parts of the Esquiline, Viminal and Quirinal hills north-east of the Colosseum; its lower streets were the ancient Subura. Its centre is Piazza della Madonna dei Monti, with a sixteenth-century fountain, and Via Urbana, which follows the line of a Roman street. The Colle Oppio park, above the remains of Nero’s Domus Aurea, and the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore are in Monti too.
In Monti:
- Poliziano 3 bedrooms · Colosseum: 10 min on foot
The street between them
Via di San Giovanni in Laterano marks the boundary between the two districts and runs in a long straight line from the Colosseum to the Lateran. On it stand the Basilica of San Clemente, a twelfth-century church built over an older one and over a temple of Mithras, and, at the far end, St John Lateran, the cathedral of Rome.
On Via di San Giovanni in Laterano:
- San Giovanni I 1 bedroom · Colosseum: 6 min on foot
- San Giovanni II 2 bedrooms · Colosseum: 6 min on foot
- Prestige 3 bedrooms · Colosseum: 12 min on foot
